TRAVEL NOTES & IDEAS
Closest airport: Inverness (about 20 minutes from the castle)
For those looking to keep things simple, flying directly into Inverness is by far the easiest option.
Flights from London airports run daily. We recommend using British Airways or Easyjet.
You can also take a train from London, Glasgow or Edinburgh to Inverness. The Caledonia Sleeper Train from London is a particular highlight and Dave's favourite way to travel between London and Scotland.
British Airways
Easyjet
LNER - regular trains from London (8hrs travel time)
Scotrail - trains from Glasgow, Dundee, Edinburgh (3-4 hrs travel time)
The Caledonia Sleeper Train - London to Inverness (Overnight)
If you want to turn this into a full Scotland trip…
We highly recommend arriving a few days early and making a journey out of it.
Suggested plan:
Friday, 13 August — Arrive in Edinburgh
Spend a few days exploring one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Walk the Royal Mile, visit the castle, and take in the contrast between the medieval Old Town and the modern New Town districts. There are few cities more friendly, walkable, and stunning than the Scottish capital.
A must-do this time of year:
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. This is a world-famous performance held at the castle, with music, military bands, and a full-scale production that’s hard to describe until you see it.
Tickets sell out early, so if this is on your list, book well in advance.
You can find tickets here: edintattoo.co.uk/tickets
Weekend through midweek — The Highlands & Isle of Skye
From Edinburgh, consider making your way north through the Highlands, with time in the Isle of Skye. Think dramatic landscapes, small villages, winding roads, and the kind of scenery that makes you stop the car every 10 minutes.
We are looking into organizing a group option through a travel company if there’s enough interest - so you can simply join and not think too hard about logistics. Please let us know if you are interested in this!
Wednesday, 18 August — Arrive in Inverness
Make your way to Inverness by Wednesday afternoon to settle in and ease into the start of the wedding weekend.
This is completely optional - but if you have the time, it’s one of those trips that’s worth doing right. In our opinion, no trip to Scotland is complete without a visit to these places!
And it would be remiss not to mention Golf. Dave's hometown of St. Andrews is considered the home of golf and is just a 45-minute drive from Edinburgh. A few days playing the famous links courses is an easy add-on. Visit Links Golf St.Andrews to arrange your trip.
Accomodation & Catering
We are covering your accommodations, food, wedding drinks, and pre-set activities while on site at the wedding celebration venue. For those unable to stay for the entire four-day celebration, we are covering bed and breakfast at surrounding hotels as well as our daily, pre-set wedding activities.
All you really need to do is get here and budget for your own shopping, souvenirs, and any plans outside of the wedding itinerary.
That said, we'd appreciate as early a response as possible to help us with room planning, which is by far the most challenging to sort out.
